The proliferation of companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Amazon illustrates how digital platforms can scale rapidly, reduce transaction costs, and create competitive advantage (Cusumano, Gawer, & Yoffie, 2019). Understanding the economic mechanisms of these models is essential for managers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers.

Network effects occur when the value of a platform increases as more users join.
